Piston rings for gasoline engines
As fuel efficiency improves, reduced weight and a decrease in mechanical loss for engines have become important issues to be solved. In order to reduce friction loss around pistons that accounts roughly for 40-50% of friction loss in the entire engine, narrower-width piston rings that are compatible with smaller pistons and the use of low-tension piston rings are becoming widespread.
As exhaust restrictions, high output, power, longer durability, and fuel efficiency are being demanded of diesel engines recently, anti-abrasion, reduced oil consumption, and high rigidity are required of piston rings.

With the recent demands for fuel efficiency, higher performance, and lighter weight engines, there is a growing trend for improving cooling performance, reducing clearance between cylinders, and using aluminum engine blocks.
